How Do I Know If I Need a Family Law Attorney?

Family plays a vital role in our lives, but when things in the family unit undesirably change between couples and those living with each other the outcomes can be unpleasant and even devastating. Reality can quickly set in with next steps turning to separation, divorce, proceeding with child custody and support, and other legal matters. Trying to work through and navigate these challenges can be difficult emotionally and understanding all of the legal jargon, laws, and the process involved can be a daunting task for anyone.  It leaves the questions, how do you know when or if you need to seek support and counsel from an experienced family law attorney, family law specialist, or family law office? What kinds of family law and divorce lawyers or domestic lawyers handle what you need? Can you represent yourself?

People can represent themselves, which is a right for all who appear before a court of sound mind, it’s called Pro Se (self-representation). Though, this is an individual’s right, it doesn’t necessarily mean it is the best option for someone or within their best interest to do so. There’s an old saying, “A lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client.” If this is saying that a lawyer shouldn’t represent themselves, regardless of their level of education, skill, and talent, then neither should you.

In the area of family law, issues can become complicated, complex, and time consuming. The direction of a legal matter can quickly change when information comes to light or when emotions run high. By having an experienced attorney on your side, they will handle your needs and legal process. From drafting to filing documents, to mediation and counseling, to appearing in court with you and on your behalf, they will have your best interest in mind to reach the right outcome for you. This is especially true if the opposing party has retained an attorney. Let the attorneys work with one another, leaving you to have peace of mind that you’re doing all the correct steps throughout the legal process. At the Law Office of Stephen E. Robertson, we provide all manner of family law and offer FREE 15-minute consultations. Stephen E.
